The Tian Shan mountains in Kazakhstan: a complete guide

Tian Shan Kazakhstan

The Tian Shan mountains, or ‘Heavenly Mountains’ in Chinese, form one of the largest mountain ranges in Central Asia, stretching across several countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and China) and occupying an essential place in the landscapes and imaginations of the peoples of the region.

In Kazakhstan, they dominate the south of the country around the city of Almaty, offering wild and spectacular alpine panoramas of turquoise lakes, deep gorges, coniferous forests and mythical peaks.

For centuries, these mountains, considered sacred, have shaped Kazakh history: they have served as natural landmarks for nomadic peoples, as refuges and as legendary lands steeped in ancestral tales.

🏔️ Respect the mountains if you visit them: in the mythology of the steppe peoples, they are alive. Each peak has its guardian spirit, to whom offerings were once left to prevent storms, falls and avalanches. It is even said that the wind is the voice of the mountain, punishing those who show disrespect — unnecessary shouting, moving stones, arrogance in the face of the peaks. Even today, some Kazakh guides avoid whistling in the mountains.

The main peaks and areas not to be missed in the Tian Shan

Ile-Alatau / Trans-Ili Alatau (≈ up to 4 979 m)

Ile-Alatau

The Trans-Ili Alatau, known as Ile-Alatau in Kazakhstan, is the mountain range that directly overlooks the city of Almaty in the northern Tian Shan. Its peaks often exceed 4,000 metres, with glaciers, deep valleys and characteristic spruce forests.

Its proximity to the country's largest city makes it one of the most accessible mountain regions in Central Asia, largely protected by the Ile-Alatau National Park.

  • Who is it for? The region is ideal for travellers of all levels. There are easy day hikes, multi-day treks, mountaineering routes and mountain resorts such as Shymbulak for skiing.
  • When to visit? The massif can be explored all year round. Summer and early autumn (June to September) are the best seasons for hiking and high-altitude treks, while winter transforms the region into a popular destination for snow sports, particularly around Shymbulak and the famous Medeu ice rink.

Kolsay Lakes (≈ 1 818 m to 2 850 m) and Lake Kaindy (≈ 2 000 m)

Kolsay Lake
The highest of the three Kolsay Lakes: Upper Lake

The Kolsay Lakes and Lake Kaindy are among the most spectacular natural landscapes in south-eastern Kazakhstan. Located in the Kolsay Lakes National Park, about 300 km from Almaty near the village of Saty, they are only about 20 km apart and are usually visited on the same trip.

The three Kolsai Lakes, nestled between 1,800 and 2,850 metres above sea level, are surrounded by spruce forests and alpine meadows, while Kaindy offers a unique setting: its turquoise waters engulf an ancient forest, whose trunks still emerge from the surface.

  • Who is it for? The region is suitable for a wide audience. The first Kolsay Lake is easily accessible and very popular for walking and camping. You can then continue to the upper lakes and Lake Kaindy on foot or on horseback.
  • When to visit? The best time is from May to September, when the trails are clear and the weather conditions are more stable. Summer is ideal for hiking and outdoor activities, while autumn colours the forests with golden hues, offering particularly photogenic views.

Big Almaty Peak (≈ 3 680 m)

Big Almaty Peak

Big Almaty Peak is one of the most iconic peaks in the Zailiyski Alatau range in the northern Tian Shan, just 15 kilometres from Almaty.

Its pyramid-shaped silhouette towers over Big Almaty Lake and is visible from much of the city, making it a very popular destination. There are several scientific facilities there, such as the Tian Shan Astronomical Observatory and the ‘Cosmostation’.

  • Who is it for? This peak is considered one of the most accessible peaks around Almaty for tourists, but the climb is still demanding. The hike to the summit can be done in a long day and the route is classified as medium difficulty: it does not require mountaineering equipment, but some sections on rocky and unstable terrain require good physical condition and mountain experience.
  • When to visit? The best time for climbing and trekking is from June to September, when the trails are generally clear and the weather is more stable in the Northern Tian Shan.

Khan Tengri (≈ 7 010 m)

Khan Tengri

Khan Tengri is one of the most legendary peaks in the central Tian Shan, located on the border between Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and China.

Its name is often translated as ‘Lord of the Sky’ or ‘King of Spirits’. In the traditions of the Turkic peoples of the Tian Shan, it was said that only men with pure hearts could approach it without arousing the wrath of the mountains. The evening light colours its marble face a deep red, a phenomenon that was once interpreted as a sign of the summit's divine power.

  • Who is it for? Khan Tengri is a destination reserved for experienced mountaineers. Although it is considered one of the most ‘accessible’ peaks over 7,000 m in Central Asia, its ascent remains technical: crevassed glaciers, steep ice passages and extreme altitude require solid high-mountain experience. Expeditions generally last 2 to 3 weeks, with acclimatisation and high-altitude camps, often accessible by helicopter to the base camp on the Inylchek Glacier.
  • When to visit? The climbing season is concentrated in a short period from mid-July to the end of August, when weather conditions are most stable in the central Tian Shan.

Talgar Peak (≈ 4 979 m)

Talgar Peak
Shymbulak, gateway to Talgar Peak

Talgar Peak is the highest point in the Zailiyski Alatau range in the northern Tian Shan, near Almaty.

Visible from the city, this glacial peak with steep slopes dominates a vast array of glaciers, including the Korjenevski Glacier, the largest in the range. It attracts mainly high-altitude mountaineers and is one of the most iconic alpine destinations in the region.

  • Who is it for? Experienced hikers and mountaineers. The ascent takes place on snow and ice, with slopes reaching 45–60°, and requires good physical condition and mountaineering skills. Expeditions usually last 8 to 10 days, including the approach, acclimatisation and final ascent, and pass through glaciers and several passes above 4,000 m.
  • When to visit? Late July to early September, when weather conditions are most stable in the northern Tian Shan.
📍 Areas close to Almaty such as Big Almaty Lake, certain routes in Ile-Alatau, or the lower Kolsay lakes have fairly clear trails, sometimes with obvious signs or markers. But the further you stray from the tourist trails, the less marked the paths become. A local guide is highly recommended to avoid getting lost.

Access and how to get to the Tian Shan mountains

Most of the accessible hikes, gorges and lakes in the Kazakh Tian Shan start from Almaty, the large metropolis in the south-east of the country. From there:

  • Tarmac roads and tracks lead to the trailheads.
  • For more remote areas such as the Kolsay Lakes, the road to the national park often requires a 4×4 vehicle or organised transport.

Tips for visiting the Tian Shan mountains

  • Hire a local guide, especially for multi-day hikes, high-altitude routes and technical climbs such as Pik Talgar or Khan Tengri. Weather conditions remain unpredictable and risks are present, even if you are experienced!
  • Check the weather forecast before setting off.
  • Inform someone of your itinerary.
  • Bring food, water, navigation equipment and suitable clothing.
