The Charyn Canyon, located in south-eastern Kazakhstan, is a natural wonder of Central Asia often compared to the Grand Canyon. With its spectacular rock formations and desert landscapes, it is an unmissable destination for a trip to Kazakhstan.
The Charyn Canyon, situated in the Almaty region, around 200 km from the city of Almaty, covers an area of approximately 154 km² and was carved out by the Charyn River.
It encompasses several famous canyons such as the Valley of Castles, Temirlik Canyon and Moon Canyon, offering unique panoramas that are ideal for hiking and photography.

Charyn Canyon is located around 200 kilometres east of Almaty, close to the Chinese border.
From Almaty, take the A351. The road is in good condition (renovated during the Covid pandemic), so an off-road vehicle is not essential.
If you opt for a guided tour, these usually depart from Almaty and include transport.
Charyn Canyon has several access points, but the hike through the Valley of Castles (taking around 2–3 hours) is the most recommended: it is the most popular and best-maintained.

The best time to visit Charyn Canyon is in the spring (April through June) and fall (September through October), when temperatures are milder and ideal for exploring the site. In the summer, the heat can be extreme, especially in the middle of the day, making visits and hikes more challenging. Winter is also not recommended: temperatures can drop sharply, some roads become difficult to access, and conditions are not ideal for fully enjoying the scenery.
Charyn Canyon is not only an impressive geological site but also a habitat rich in biodiversity.
Charyn Canyon is home to a diverse array of wildlife adapted to the arid, mountainous environments of Central Asia. Among the iconic species is the Siberian mouflon, perfectly adapted to the rugged terrain. Foxes are also present, while the lynx, rarer and more elusive, inhabits the most isolated areas of the canyon. Wild boars, which are fairly common, can sometimes be seen rooting through the ground in search of food.
The canyon is also a prime habitat for many birds, particularly raptors. The cliffs are home to species such as vultures, eagles, falcons, buzzards, and owls, which take advantage of the air currents to glide above the canyon.

The flora of Charyn Canyon is adapted to the region’s arid and extreme conditions. It consists mainly of desert and semi-desert plants, such as hardy shrubs, grasses, and thorny bushes. The site is best known for being home to the rare Sogdian ash, a relict species unique to Central Asia, which can be found in certain wetter areas along the Charyn River. This vegetation, though unassuming, plays a vital role in the balance of this fragile ecosystem.
