Travelling by train in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan, with its vast steppes, majestic mountains, and modern cities, is an increasingly popular destination for travelers.

To explore this country with breathtaking landscapes, the train is a favored mode of transport. But is it safe, practical, and suited to your needs? Here's a complete guide to everything you need to know about train travel in Kazakhstan.

Why choose the train in Kazakhstan?

Traveling by train in Kazakhstan is much more than just a way to get from one place to another: it’s an immersive experience. You cross breathtaking landscapes, meet friendly locals, and discover the unique pace of life in this country. Whether you’re a solo adventurer or a traveler seeking comfort, the train offers an authentic and memorable way to explore Kazakhstan.

Is it safe to travel by train in Kazakhstan?

Yes, traveling by train in Kazakhstan is generally considered safe.

The country has a well-developed railway network, managed by the national company KTZ (Kazakhstan Temir Zholy). The trains are modern, well-maintained, and monitored, making them a reliable option for travelers.

However, like with any trip, it's important to remain vigilant:

  • Keep your personal belongings secure, especially in shared compartments.
  • Avoid traveling with valuables visible.
  • Follow safety instructions and local rules.

Is Traveling by Train Practical in Kazakhstan?

The train is one of the most practical ways to cross Kazakhstan, a vast country (the 9th largest in the world). Here's why:

  • Comfort: Kazakh trains offer various levels of comfort, from standard seats to private compartments.
  • Scenery: Traveling by train allows you to enjoy the varied landscapes of Kazakhstan, from endless steppes to the Altai mountains.
  • Accessibility: Trains connect major cities like Almaty, Astana, Shymkent, and Aktobe, as well as more remote regions and neighboring countries.

However, the distances can be long. For example, the journey from Almaty to Astana takes about 13 to 18 hours, depending on the type of train.

Where to buy train tickets?

There are several ways to purchase train tickets in Kazakhstan:

  1. Online: The official KTZ website, available in English, allows you to book and buy tickets online, or via the Kaspi banking app.
  2. At the stations: You can buy your tickets directly at the stations, but it is recommended to book in advance, especially during peak times.
  3. Through travel agencies: Some local agencies can help you organize your train journeys, especially if you don’t speak Russian or Kazakh.
🎫 Buy your tickets in advance. They are available for sale 45 days before the departure date.

The different types of trains in Kazakhstan

Kazakh trains, heirs of the Soviet era, retain an authentic charm with their cabins equipped with beds and communal spaces. Given the vastness of the country, trips can last overnight, a full day, or even more than 24 hours.

The onboard atmosphere is warm and relaxed: travelers chat, share meals, and get to know each other, creating a unique vibe.

Express Trains (Talgo)

They stand out for their comfort and speed. Equipped with reclining seats, air conditioning, and power outlets, they can connect cities like Almaty and Astana in about 13 hours.

Night Trains

These are an excellent option for long trips, offering sleeping compartments (kupe) or second-class seats (platskart).

You will find several types of seats:

  • Sleeping places in a common carriage (choice between top and bottom bunks).
  • Sleeping places in a private compartment for 4 people (choice between top and bottom bunks).
  • Sleeping places in a private compartment for 2 people (business class).

Not all options are always available on every train; it depends on the type of train.

Local trains

These trains are slower and less modern, but they allow you to reach less touristy destinations and explore the rural regions of Kazakhstan.

International trains

Trains link Astana to Moscow, along with numerous other cities, offering a scenic route through vast steppes and forests. Others take passengers to Uzbekistan or China.

These international trains, like the night trains, often offer sleeping compartments and dining services, making long journeys pleasant and comfortable.

⚠️ For long trips, don’t forget to buy bedding when you book your ticket (usually included).

Tips for traveling by train in Kazakhstan

  • Book in advance: Tickets can sell out quickly, especially during peak seasons (summer and holidays).
  • Bring food: Although some trains have a dining car, it's advisable to bring snacks and water.
  • Dress in layers: Temperatures on trains can vary, especially in winter.
  • Learn a few words in Russian or Kazakh: While the staff is often helpful, knowing a few basic phrases can make your journey smoother.
