Lake Balkhash, located in southeastern Kazakhstan in the historic Jetyssou region, is one of the largest lakes in Central Asia and one of the most remarkable in the world. What makes it unique? It is half freshwater and half saltwater, a rare phenomenon that intrigues travelers and scientists.
Still relatively untouched by tourism, Lake Balkhash is an ideal destination for lovers of nature, adventure, and off-the-beaten-path landscapes.
Lake Balkhash offers a unique experience:

If youâre looking for a pleasant spot to swim and unwind, head to the western part of the lake, where the water is fresh. This is the most comfortable area, particularly around the town of Balkhash, with easy access and a few amenities.

There are various types of beaches around Lake Balkhash: sandy beaches, especially near populated areas; pebble beaches, which are generally quieter but less comfortable without the right equipment; and wild, more secluded beaches, which appeal for their tranquility but lack any infrastructure.
Conversely, certain areas should be avoided for swimming, particularly marshy or very shallow sections, where the water is stagnant and unpleasant.
Fishing is a popular activity around Lake Balkhash, particularly on the western side where the water is fresh and teeming with fish.

The lake is home to several species, including carp, walleye, perch, and pike. As with swimming, certain shallow or marshy areas are less appealing, while more open waters offer better conditions.
It is advisable to check locally for regulations and permitted times.
Wild camping is widely practiced, particularly on the lakeâs secluded shores. The wide-open spaces and low visitor numbers make it easy to set up camp, whether in a tent or a vehicle. However, there is very little dedicated camping infrastructure.
Around the town of Balkhash, there are a few simple lodgings and occasionally informal campsites, but nothing comparable to organized campgrounds as found in Europe (note that there is no drinking water on site). In most cases, you must be completely self-sufficient.

It is therefore essential to pack the necessary supplies (water, food, sunscreen, camping gear). Camping at Lake Balkhash is a rather rustic experience, but that is also what makes it so appealing: a natural, open environment that remains largely undeveloped.
Around Lake Balkhash, the landscape is characterized by vast, open spaces with very little urban development. The region is dominated by arid steppes and semi-desert areas, with low, sparse vegetation. On some shores, the atmosphere becomes almost desert-like.
Near the rivers that feed the lake, particularly in the Ili Delta, the landscapes change to include wetter areas, reeds, and a notable presence of birds. This contrast between dry environments and greener spaces makes exploration particularly interesting.

There arenât any major tourist attractions per se, but rather natural sites to explore: wild riverbanks, small local villages, and the town of Balkhash. The main draw is the natural beauty, the tranquility, and the chance to explore areas that are still off the beaten path.
