Kyrgyzstan is a land of raw nature, where high-altitude lakes offer spectacular panoramas and a unique immersion into nomadic culture. Here is a selection of the country’s most beautiful lakes, along with practical information to help you plan your trip.
1. Issyk-Kul lake
A vast inland sea surrounded by mountains, Issyk-Kul is the most accessible and touristic lake in the country. It is known for its slightly salty waters that never freeze, hence its name: “warm lake”.

Activities
North shore: around the town of Cholpon-Ata: comfortable seaside resorts with various types of accommodation (yurts, guesthouses, hotels), sometimes private equipped beaches, as well as thermal baths and mineral water springs. Many activities are offered: pedal boat rentals, inflatable towing (banana boat), parasailing, or exploring the lake by kayak.
South shore: more wild and preserved, it offers authentic landscapes and is an ideal setting for hiking in the surrounding mountains and valleys.
2. Song-Kul lake
Song-Kul is the second largest lake in Kyrgyzstan, and an iconic alpine lake of nomadic life. Surrounded by vast pastures, it is occupied in summer by shepherds who set up their yurts there, with wild horses roaming freely along its shores.

Hiking: numerous mountain passes surround the lake, offering both day hikes and multi-day trekking routes, particularly from Kochkor or Naryn.
Horse trekking: it is one of the best places in the country for this experience, with the possibility of encountering horses roaming freely.
Nomadic life: stay in a yurt and discover the daily life of Kyrgyz shepherds.
3. Kel-Suu lake
A spectacular and isolated lake, nestled between high steep cliffs, Kel-Suu is one of the wildest sites in Kyrgyzstan. Its clear waters stretch at the heart of a canyon landscape, surrounded by rocky walls and snow-capped peaks. More difficult to access, it remains little visited.

A lake nestled in the heart of a forested nature reserve, rare in a predominantly mountainous country, Sary-Chelek is a true paradise for nature lovers. Smaller than the other major lakes of Kyrgyzstan, it stretches over about 7.5 km in length.

Swimming: enjoy the lake’s waters in a preserved natural setting.
A turquoise glacial lake perched high in the mountains, Ala-Kul is famous for its unreal colors and demanding treks. Its name means “variegated lake” in Kyrgyz, referring to its changing hues depending on the light and weather.
The lake remains frozen from late autumn until May, and even in summer, its waters remain icy.

About 16 to 20 km on foot, or 1 to 2 days of hiking with significant elevation gain
Activities
Trekking : an advanced-level hike through a spectacular alpine environment. It is recommended to go with an experienced guide, as the trails can be difficult to follow despite stone markers.
6. Chatyr-Kul lake
Chatyr-Kul is a remote lake located near the Chinese border, and stretches across an arid and wild environment, very rarely visited. Its name means “celestial lake” in Kyrgyz. Classified as a site of international importance, it serves as a resting area for many species of migratory birds.
Climatic conditions are extreme: an average annual temperature of around -5°C, which can drop to -50°C in winter, and reach 25°C in summer.
